I started rambling the backroads when I was traveling on business and had to visit many rural area school districts. I discovered that the backroads were a lot more interesting than driving on the interstate. Fewer cars and better scenery.
Since I always had my cell phone with me, I also had a camera as well. I fell in love with the beauty of old falling down shacks, barns and old rusted out cars that could date back to the 30’s. I began to stop and take photos of what caught my eye. I started leaving early and coming home late so I could take my time, make turns off the beaten path and discover what may have been forgotten.
When Covid hit, all changed, and no more business trips. To keep from going stir crazy but needing to be safe, I started getting in my car and hitting all the backroads in York, Chester and Lancaster County. I took a leap of faith and bought a 35mm mirrorless digital camera and a few lenses and downloaded some editing software. The rest is history. Now I take off for day trips to discover more of South Carolina and soon North Carolina.
We miss so much by going on the interstate because we are in a hurry and we want to get where we are going as fast as we can. I have learned to slow down and take the long way. I set my GPS for avoiding highways, pick a small town, a crossroads, or just turn down a road I never been before. I may travel 30 minutes or a couple of hours; all depends on my mood at the moment. I have driven for a couple of hours to find nothing to head home and take a separate route to hit paydirt.
York County has some great little communities that are hidden treasures like Smyrna, Hickory Grove and Hopewell. Lando and Edgemoor in Chester County. South Carolina is full of hidden jewels if we just slow down and take the long road to adventure.
Go on this journey with me as I continue to discover not only York County but where ever turning left or right may take me. I will share my photos and my insights. You never know, you may decide to do a journey of your own and take the long way.
