I got involved in politics because we have so much to lose in this upcoming election. You hear it every election cycle, but this time it feels real. It starts with people with the capacity for pregnancy’s right to choose when to start a family, The future of our climate and home, People who look like me getting shot and killed by the very same people we look up to for protection, Keeping me and so many other kids safe in a place where we should be learning and not be in constant fear, and so much more that is at stake. We have a duty as American citizens to vote, it takes all of us to change this country and only you can do it with that one vote. If you can’t vote and are like me it’s important to do all the research you can, and volunteer and/or intern.

I became an intern for the Joe Cunningham campaign because I wanted to make a difference and fight for change. I couldn’t do that as a voter because I can’t vote yet. Yes, I may only be 17 but I can already tell how important elections are. The future starts with you before making it down to me. The current generations have to be willing to secure and fight for my generation before we can fight for the other generations that are expected to succeed us. We the American people must grow the tree of freedom with roots of hope that flow deeply into this nation and touch every American.

My ambitions and hopes are to fight for the American people for everything they need. I want to be a politician, but I don’t want to be a politician for the office in DC, or to be on the trail of an election campaign, nor is it about money or greed. See my goal is to make sure that every voice is heard and then we work to make sure they are properly represented.

While on this journey through the summer I have worked with US House Candidates, and State House Candidates, I have met with SCDP leaders, and I even had dinner with the first Black, Asian, and woman Vice President of The United States, Kamala Harris. The journey I embarked on during this summer was a blessing and I hope to continue the great blessing I have been through for the rest of my life if possible. I have seen many things and have met many people during this summer. It has been an honor of a lifetime, and I hope I can continue it.

    Thank you,  Ethan Lewis
